Recognition of Indian Degrees Abroad: Engineering and Medicine Lagging Behind

Several foreign countries, including the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, and Australia, have recognized Indian degrees.

Recent government statistics that were given in Parliament show that from 444,553 in 2021 to 750,365 in 2022, there was a 68 increase in the number of Indian scholars attending advanced education institutions abroad. Indian scholars constantly choose the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Singapore, Germany, Ireland, and New Zealand as their study abroad locales.30.13 lakh Indian scholars have left the country since 2017 to pursue advanced education abroad, with 7.5 lakh doing so in 2022 alone, according to data handed in February by Subhas Sarkar, the Union Minister of State for Education. This represents a 28 increase from the pre-pandemic record in 2019 and a 69 increase from 2021.

Under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Indian degrees are now gaining recognition in foreign countries similar to the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, New Zealand, and Australia. This has been eased by the signing of an’ education qualification recognition medium’ between India and Australia, as well as the character of Indian universities and sanctioned recognition by nonsupervisory bodies similar as UGC, AICTE, National Medical Commission, and Bar Council.

In a recent discussion with FE Education Online, Arvind Chaturvedi, pro vice chancellor, IILM University, Gurugram and Radhika Shrivastava, administrative director, Fortune Institute of International Business( FIIB), shared their perception on the oddities of these collaborations. Chaturvedi emphasized that the character of Indian universities and institutions play a pivotal part in gaining recognition from foreign HEIs. Still, for lower- known institutions, sanctioned recognition from nonsupervisory bodies becomes a criterion for recognition.

To ensure sanctioned recognition, nonsupervisory bodies similar as UGC, AICTE, National Medical Commission, and Bar Council are used for verification. Likewise, some foreign HEIs also fete the delegation agencies similar as NAAC and NBA, which estimate the quality of Indian institutions. The weightage given to these parameters by foreign HEIs varies.

Overall, the internationalization of education under the NEP 2020 is opening up new openings for Indian scholars to pursue advanced education abroad and gain recognition for their degrees. The recognition of Indian degrees by foreign HEIs is an important step towards India’s goal of becoming a global education mecca.
