6,448 Schools to Receive Upgrades through PM-SHRI Scheme

Government’s PM-SHRI plan to revamp over 6,000 schools in 28 states and union territories was approved with a budget of 27,360 crore.

6,448 schools will be renovated as part of the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM-SHRI) programme, the majority of which will be in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra. In September of last year, the Union Cabinet approved the programme, providing a budget of 27,360 crore to build 14,500 schools over the succeeding five years. Schools were chosen for the first round of PM-SHRI schools based on six criteria, including curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, and access to infrastructure, last month.

The scheme is expected to benefit 1.8 million students and ensure that schools serve as model institutes and encapsulate the spirit of the National Education Policy (NEP), 2020. The selected schools will be modern, inclusive, accessible, and developed as “green schools” with water conservation, waste recycling, and energy-efficient infrastructure. The Centre has requested all the states to prepare Annual Work Plan & Budget proposals for the Project Approval Board meetings and designate a separate Single Nodal Agency for funding of the PM-SHRI scheme.

This program is anticipated to help 1.8 million kids and make schools into role models for institutions that follow the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 criteria. Hindustan Times reported that over 200,000 schools applied for the first round of upgradation under the PM SHRI scheme through an online portal launched by the Union Education Ministry in November 2022. In a recent meeting, officials concluded the selection process for the first round of upgrading.

The Education Ministry’s statistics show that Uttar Pradesh had the most schools chosen, with 928 institutions, followed by Andhra Pradesh (662), Telangana (543), Maharashtra (516), Madhya Pradesh (416), and Rajasthan (402). The government separated the selection process for PM SHRI schools into three stages.
